He graduated from the country's premier military institution, the Philippine Military Academy, as a member of "Maharlika" Class 1984. His early years in the service were spent in combat as a Special Forces Operator deployed in the areas of Luzon and Mindanao.
A seasoned combat commander, Lieutenant General San Juan made his way through the rungs of leadership giving him a wide variety of experiences in different command positions around the Philippines. As Special Forces Operator, he held various positions with the Special Operations Command, to name a few: as a Team Leader the 18th Special Forces Company in 1992; Company Commander of the 31st Special Forces Company in 1993; Commander, UN Guard Contingent in Iraq by year 1995; Commandant of the Special Forces School in 2001; Battalion Commander of the 1st Special Forces Battalion In 2002; Deputy Commander of the Special Forces Regiment ( Airborne) and at the same time, the Commander of the Special Operations Task Group "Alegan" in 2008. He was assigned at the Headquarters Philippine Army serving as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Personnel, G1 from the 3rd Quarter of 2010 until the 1st Quarter of 2012. He was designated as Regiment Commander of the Special Forces Regiment (Airborne) in 2012 prior his designation as the Commander of the Special Operations Command of the Philippine Army on 18 December 2013. He was designated as Superintendent PMA on 13 February 2016.
He took up several local and foreign courses and training. He is a graduate of the highly sought-after and competitive Special Forces Operations Course, the Scout Ranger Orientation Course, the International Officer Intel Course in Continental USA (CONUS), the Intel Officer Basic Course, the Basic Airborne Course, the Infantry Officer Basic and Advance Courses, the Military Scuba Diving Course, the Command and General Staff Course, and the Defense Seminar in COLOMBO, SRI LANKA. In 1999 he finished his Masters in Management at the Asian Institute of Management in Makati, and on 2011, he completed the Corporate Governance and Risk Management Seminar at the Ateneo de Manila University.
In his 33 years of service, he has been a recipient of numerous awards and decorations that include three (3) Distinguished Service Stars, the Gold Cross Medal, five (5) Bronze Cross Medals, Sixteen(16), Outstanding Officer of the Year, Military Merit Medals, Military Commendation Medals, and letters of commendation from commanders he has served with. With his leadership, his unit was awarded as the Most Outstanding Battalion in 2002, Best Outstanding Special Forces Battalion on CMO in 2003, and the Most Outstanding Special Forces Battalion in same year. Aside from his decorations for combat, LIEUTENANT GENERAL SAN JUAN has also been awarded Military Civic Action Medals, and Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation Medals all of which were awarded for his achievements in community development and other non-combat pursuits.
LIEUTENANT GENERAL SAN JUAN knows the value of family, making sure to spend quality time despite his hectic schedule as an AFP officer, with his wife DR MA VICTORIA with whom he has been happily married with for 26 years; and, their children, Tiffanny, Joshua, and Maxine.
